The Benefits of Dental Sealants
No matter the age, everyone will have teeth with varying levels of crevices in the chewing surface of the teeth. These grooves are known as pits and fissures that can trap bits of food when someone eats. In fact, some crevices can be so deep that toothbrush bristles may not be small enough to reach inside and clean them.
These pits and fissures can become a conducive environment for bacteria to thrive and form cavities. Dental sealants prevent the possibility of cavities by covering the grooves and crevices. Sealants have many other advantages, including:
Protecting the teeth from decay and food particlesEasy to apply and highly effectiveAn affordable and practical method of preventing cavitiesPrevents costly dental proceduresThey are white or transparent, which makes them almost invisibleThey can resist the force of chewing and are durableApplying Dental Sealants
Applying dental sealants is a relatively simple and straightforward process. Sealing each tooth only takes a few minutes. First, we will clean the teeth thoroughly to remove dirt or debris. Next, we will dry the teeth and keep moisture off with an absorbent material like cotton. We will then abrade the chewing surface of the tooth with an acid solution to ensure the sealants bond to the teeth.
This solution will not harm the child. In most cases with applying dental sealants, the child will not feel much of anything. After, we will rinse and dry the teeth before applying the sealants to the surface of the enamel. The sealants will bond and harden quickly. We may even use a special curing light to speed up the process and harden the sealants.
Generally, the sealants can offer dental protection for up to 3 to 5 years. Regardless, we will check the dental sealants for chipping and wear during routine appointments. The sealants may be reapplied if necessary.
